Dr. Louisa Satekla Cautions Against Hard Bristled Toothbrushes, Shares Key Oral Hygiene Tips ; Hard bristled toothbrushes can harm your teeth
Dr. Louisa Satekla, a renowned dentist and wife of award-winning musician Stonebwoy, has issued a strong warning against the use of hard-bristled toothbrushes, emphasizing that they cause more harm than good.
Speaking in an interview on
Joy Prime, she debunked the common misconception that harder bristles clean teeth more effectively.
“Many people believe that using a hard-bristle toothbrush helps remove all food particles, but unfortunately, that’s not true. Some even say they feel better using one, but we do not recommend it,” Dr. Louisa explained. “Hard bristles can damage both your teeth and gums over time.”
Instead, she advises opting for a soft or medium-bristle toothbrush, stressing that the technique used in brushing is far more important than the pressure applied.
“It’s not about brushing harder; it’s about brushing the right way. If you use excessive force, you risk harming your teeth and gums,” she cautioned.
Beyond brushing, Dr. Louisa highlighted the importance of flossing—an essential yet often overlooked aspect of oral hygiene.
“When you brush, you clean the front, back, and top of your teeth, but you still miss about 30% of the surfaces. Flossing helps you reach those hidden areas that a toothbrush cannot,” she advised.
Her expert insights serve as a crucial reminder for everyone to adopt the right oral care habits to maintain healthy teeth and gums for the long term.
