Ghana Condemns Alleged U.S. Military Invasion of Venezuela, Demands Release of President Maduro

The Government of Ghana has expressed grave concern and strong condemnation over what it describes as an unauthorised military invasion of Venezuela by the United States and the subsequent abduction of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, calling for their immediate release and a swift de-escalation of tensions.

In a press release issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Saturday, January 4, 2026, the Government of Ghana said it was alarmed by reports of a unilateral use of force against the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela in the early hours of Saturday, January 3.

Ghana noted that such actions constitute a clear violation of the Charter of the United Nations and international law, particularly principles relating to state sovereignty, territorial integrity and political independence. The government warned that unilateral military interventions pose serious threats to international peace, stability and the global order.

According to the statement, Ghana is closely monitoring developments in Venezuela and expressed deep concern about what it described as attempts at external control of the country’s territory and oil resources, noting that such actions could have far-reaching adverse implications for global stability.

The statement further referenced comments attributed to the U.S. President suggesting that the United States would “run” Venezuela until a transition deemed appropriate was achieved, and that major U.S. oil companies would be invited to operate in the country. Ghana described these remarks as reminiscent of colonial and imperialist eras, cautioning that such ambitions have no place in the modern, post–Second World War international system.

The Government of Ghana stressed that permitting such actions would undermine the sovereignty of all nations and place the international community at significant risk. It reaffirmed its long-standing commitment to the principle of self-determination, emphasizing that only the people of Venezuela have the right to freely decide their political and democratic future.

Ghana called for the immediate de-escalation of the situation and demanded the release of President Nicolás Maduro and his wife. The statement concluded by reiterating Ghana’s principled opposition to invasion, occupation, colonialism, apartheid and all forms of violation of international law.
