President Mahama Signs Bill to Abolish E-levy and betting Tax, Fulfilling Major Campaign Promise
In a significant move to ease the financial burden on Ghanaians, President
John Dramani Mahama has officially signed a bill into law that abolishes several taxes introduced by the previous administration.
The President gave his assent today, April 2, 2025, marking a major milestone in his commitment to reducing the tax load on individuals and businesses. This action aligns with his campaign promise to scrap specific taxes within 120 days of assuming office.
Parliament Repeals E-Levy Ahead of Presidential Assent
This development follows Parliament’s decision on March 25, 2025, to repeal the Electronic Transfer Levy (E-Levy) Act of 2022, a tax that had sparked widespread debate since its introduction. Many Ghanaians had expressed frustration over the levy, arguing that it placed an unnecessary financial burden on mobile money transactions and electronic payments.
With the President’s approval, the tax repeal is now legally binding, bringing much-needed relief to businesses, traders, and everyday citizens.
Legal Backing for the Tax Abolition
The move is also in accordance with Article 106(7) of the 1992 Constitution, which outlines the process for passing and repealing laws in Ghana.
By fulfilling this promise early in his administration, President Mahama signals his determination to reform the country’s tax system and provide economic relief to struggling Ghanaians.
