President John Dramani Mahama has reiterated his administration’s firm resolve to end illegal mining, emphasizing that the fight against galamsey is not one of convenience but a battle for national survival and environmental sustainability.

President John Dramani Mahama has restated his government’s unflinching commitment to combating illegal mining, stressing that protecting Ghana’s environment is a non-negotiable priority for his administration.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the President declared that the war against galamsey is crucial to safeguarding the country’s future. “The fight against illegal mining (galamsey) is not a matter of convenience; it is essential for our survival. We cannot destroy our environment while claiming to build our future,” he stated.

President Mahama commended journalists who risk their safety to uncover environmental crimes, singling out Erastus Asare Donkor for his courage and professionalism in exposing the devastation caused by illegal mining.

He noted that his government’s strategy goes beyond enforcement, focusing also on creating sustainable alternatives for communities dependent on illegal mining. “We are not just fighting galamsey. We are also creating alternatives, including recruiting more volunteers for the Tree for Life Reforestation Programme and Blue Water Guards to protect our rivers,” he said.

The President warned that attacks on public officials enforcing environmental laws will not be tolerated. He urged communities to support lawful operations rather than resist them.

Addressing Ghana’s youth, President Mahama outlined several initiatives aimed at providing decent and sustainable employment. “We are creating alternative opportunities, including the National Apprenticeship Programme, to provide you with sustainable jobs. Let’s choose sustainable livelihoods over environmental destruction,” he appealed.

Reaffirming his personal resolve, the President concluded: “I assure you, as your President, that I will NEVER give up this fight against illegal mining.”

The Mahama administration has intensified efforts to restore degraded lands, protect water bodies, and promote sustainable livelihoods, marking a renewed phase in Ghana’s environmental protection agenda.
