President Mahama Reaffirms Commitment to Free and Safe Media at 29th GJA Awards

President John Dramani Mahama has reiterated his administration’s unwavering commitment to ensuring a free, safe, and efficient media environment in Ghana, pledging zero tolerance for any form of intimidation, interference, or attack on journalists.

President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed his government’s strong dedication to media freedom and safety, describing the press as an indispensable partner in national development.

Speaking at the 29th Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) Media Awards held in Kumasi on Saturday, the President congratulated Godwin Asediba of TV3 Network Limited and all other award-winning journalists for their outstanding contributions to promoting professionalism and excellence in the media industry.

He also commended the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) for its innovative decision to host the awards ceremony outside Accra for the first time, noting that it reflects the Association’s commitment to inclusivity and national representation.

President Mahama assured that under his administration, the government would “neither sanction nor tolerate any form of intimidation, interference, or attack on journalists,” adding that the protection of media practitioners remains a cornerstone of Ghana’s democracy.

To further strengthen relations between the media and the security agencies, the President announced that he has directed the Minister of State for Government Communications and the Minister responsible for National Security to establish a permanent forum for regular engagements between journalists and security agencies.

According to him, the initiative aims to foster mutual respect, enhance collaboration, and prevent misunderstandings or incidents that could undermine press freedom.

The 29th GJA Awards brought together journalists, media owners, government officials, and key stakeholders to celebrate excellence and uphold the values of truth, integrity, and professionalism in journalism.
